Day 14: The Mashed Potato Hawk

Foraging species (with or without feathers) quickly become adept at spotting delicacies.

For example, perhaps one day you are casually scouting the terrain for snacks, when all of a sudden you spy…….mashed potatoes!

There is an unattended bowl FULL of them sitting right in front of you!

Here, it is a great idea to jump right onto the bowl to claim it.

But you must also guard your find from other hungry beings who might want some.

Only the most skilled of ferocious foragers can perfect the art of using both skill sets at once: foraging and guarding.

Well look what we have here! Delicious mashed potatoes - all for me!

Don't at all mind if I do!

Whoa. I am picking up vibrations of an approaching poacher.

Whoa. I am picking up vibrations of an approaching poacher.

From the looks of it, the poacher is large, featherless, and quite hungry.

From the sound of it, the poacher is large, most likely featherless, and quite hungry.

VERY hungry.

VERY hungry.

I'll just look very ferocious - that should send it packing right away.

I’ll just look fiercely ferocious – that should send it packing right away.

Yup. Just as I thought. It ran for cover.

What is it, Mom? Share my find? Well, sure, you can have a bite.

Just as soon as I'm finished.

Just as soon as I’m finished.
